HEALTH CAMPUS IMMUNOLOGY, INFECTIOLOGY AND INFLAMMATION

Symposium „Infections in Hematology and Oncology“ 2017

The Symposium “Infections in Hematology and Oncology” took place on the 18th of January 2017 under the scientific leadership of Dr. med. Enrico Schalk and Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Fischer from the Department of Hematology and Oncology. These lectures were certified by the medical association as a training event. They were well visited with around 60 audience members, and the many lengthy discussions after the lectures showed that the content was exciting and thought-provoking.

Dr. SchalkProf. Fischer welcomed the audience in the central lecture hall of the University Hospital Magdeburg and introduced them to the theme of the evening, which would be approached from many angles.  Namely, in addition to the clinical aspects, the newest insights from fundamental up to mathematical models for neutropenia were presented.  Dr. Schalk then emphasized the many advances that have occurred in the last few years in the treatment of patients in the field of hematology and oncology.  He also pointed out that these improved prognoses also result in improvements in the treatment of infectiological complications, which are still one of the main threats to oncology patients.

After that, Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Martin Schmidt-Hieber (HELIOS Clinic Berlin-Buch, Clinic of Hematology, Oncology and Tumor Immunology), Dr. med. Daniel Teschner (Universitätsmedizin Mainz, III. Medical Clinic and Polyclinic), Dr. med. Enrico Schalk, Dr. med. Robert Damm (University Hospital Magdeburg, Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine) and Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sebastian Sager (OvGU, Institute of Mathematical Optimization) held five exciting and much-discussed lectures over the newest developments and clinical guidelines for clinical and experimental infectiology for patients with hematological-oncological diseases.

The event, which was organized by the Tumorzentrum Magdeburg/Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. and by the Health Campus Immunology, Infectiology and Inflammation (GC-I³), was rounded out with a small reception, which the audience members used to discuss the presentations with each other and the lecturers.
