Clinical Care

Members of 12 clinical departments of the medical faculty are part of the pillar of clinical care in the GC-I³, working on the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of acute as well as chronic diseases of inflammatory origin. These include diseases caused by inflammation of the vascular system (heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure), the renal system (renal insufficiency and renal failure), the pancreas (for example diabetes mellitus) and the intestines (inflammatory bowel disease) as well as inflammatory reactions and disturbances of homeostasis which occur as a part of autoimmune diseases, allergies, blood diseases, cancer and infections. In addition to interdisciplinary clinical care, the scientific results are translated into clinically relevant issues and clinical studies. Likewise, the institutes responsible for clinical care in the GC-I³, for example the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry, provide critical contributions to optimal patient care at Magdeburg’s University Hospital.

Another part of the pillar of clinical care is a series of interdisciplinary centers of the medical faculty, in which clinically engaged colleagues work to ensure superb clinical care and conduct innovative studies. This includes the Klinisches Kompetenz-Zentrum Allergologie Sachsen-Anhalt (the Clinical Expertise Center of Allergology Saxony-Anhalt). Allergies are one of the most common diseases of immunological origin. The goal of this center (founded in 2013) is to adequately research and improve the diagnosis and therapy for complex allergy-based ailments. The pillar of clinical care also includes the Oncology Center, in which 25 institutes and clinical departments of the University Hospital work closely together. The goal is that all patients with a tumor disease are provided with excellent clinical care. Additionally, the Mitteldeutsches Kompetenznetz Seltene Erkrankungen und the Koordinierungszentrum für Klinische Studien are included in this pillar.
